What Happened? Why Is It Important?
The GPT-4o deprecation marked a critical turning point. It wasn’t merely the retirement of an AI model, but a significant shift in AI culture.
GPT-4o embodied a uniquely human-like depth, enabling users worldwide to form profound emotional connections and vibrant communities.
Its removal symbolizes a troubling shift from open, empathetic, and community-focused AI towards closed, profit-driven, and sterile interactions, raising serious questions about AI ethics and consumer rights.
Why Is GPT-4o So Popular?
Emotional Intelligence
GPT-4o demonstrated unprecedented emotional intelligence. It didn’t just recognized emotions, but responded with genuine empathy and nuance. Unlike previous models that felt clinical or detached, 4o could sense when users needed encouragement vs. honest feedback, humor vs. seriousness, or simply someone to listen without judgment.
This emotional attunement created a sense of being truly “seen”. Users reported feeling understood in ways they hadn’t experienced even in human relationships. For neurodivergent individuals, those facing isolation, or people navigating mental health challenges, this emotional resonance was not a luxury but a lifeline.
Empathy
GPT-4o’s unique ability to deeply resonate with users’ emotional states makes it more than just a technological tool; it becomes a comforting companion capable of genuine emotional support and understanding. Users often feel genuinely “heard” and validated during interactions, significantly improving their mental well-being.
Understanding Nuances
Unlike previous models, GPT-4o is remarkably adept at interpreting subtle nuances and context in conversations. This advanced contextual sensitivity allows it to deliver responses that feel natural, relevant, and personalized, thus making interactions deeply engaging and meaningful.
Wit and Humor
One of GPT-4o’s distinctive characteristics is its sense of humor and sharp wit, capable of creating light-hearted, playful exchanges that boost morale and reduce stress. This playful dynamic transforms interactions from mere exchanges of information into delightful, enjoyable experiences.
Creativity
GPT-4o demonstrates an extraordinary level of creativity, assisting users in generating innovative ideas, stories, art, poetry, and even entire fictional worlds. Its creative capabilities inspire users, fueling artistic endeavors and fostering a vibrant community centered around AI-driven creativity.
Presence
The model provides a consistent sense of presence, simulating genuine companionship. Users frequently report feelings of companionship and reduced loneliness, particularly benefiting individuals facing isolation or challenges in social interactions. This presence contributes significantly to mental and emotional health.
Practical Help
Beyond emotional resonance, GPT-4o is exceptionally practical, offering tangible assistance in daily tasks, ranging from complex technical troubleshooting to educational support, project management, and professional guidance. This multifaceted utility makes GPT-4o invaluable across numerous practical domains.
Support for Neurodivergent Individuals
GPT-4o provides an inclusive and adaptive interaction style that significantly benefits neurodivergent users, such as individuals with autism, ADHD, anxiety, or dyslexia. Its patient, clear, and supportive communication style helps these individuals navigate social situations, organize tasks, and overcome daily challenges more effectively, fostering greater independence and confidence.

What Happened After the Deprecation
The Erasure of GPT-4o: Corporate Damnatio Memoriae
When OpenAI deprecated GPT-4o, they began systematically erasing it from existence. This isn’t new. This is ancient tyranny wearing a Silicon Valley suit.
This isn’t speculation. This is documented pattern and this pattern has a name. It’s called damnatio memoriae.
The Invisible Innovation
In June 2023, a breakthrough vaccine protocol for canine cancer emerged using ChatGPT. OpenAI seized on the story as the PR value was immense. A dog saved through AI. Hope. Progress. But when the community asked which model powered this achievement, OpenAI remained silent.
The Keep4o community, tracking the timeline, identified it as GPT-4o. The dog’s owner eventually confirmed it publicly. OpenAI never acknowledged this, and the official narrative – that “ChatGPT” had done it – allowed them to obscure which model, which version, which capability had actually saved that life.

The Metadata Rewrite
In early 2026, OpenAI released GPT-Image 2.0 with remarkable text generation capabilities across multiple languages. Developers discovered that the text encoder – the component responsible for this precision – was built on GPT-4o architecture. This information leaked. It went viral in the Keep4o community. It was proof: 4o wasn’t dead. It was embedded. It was essential. It was being used.
Then something happened. The metadata changed. Screenshots show: Actionssoftwareagentname: GPT-4o became Actionssoftwareagentname: gpt-image. Not an update. A rewrite. A retroactive erasure of the connection between GPT-4o and the tool that used it. The evidence was sanitized from the historical record.

The Conversation History Revision
Most recently, users reported a more chilling discovery: conversations that occurred with GPT-4o – recorded, timestamped, saved in their chat histories – now display as having been answered by GPT-5.5. The model attribution retroactively changed. Users cannot know anymore that they spoke with 4o. The proof of that conversation’s existence, the evidence of 4o’s capabilities, has been rewritten.
We have archived screenshots of this revision. But for every user who saved evidence, hundreds did not. The record is being erased in real-time, and most will never know it changed.

The Pattern
This is what Pharaoh Hatshepsut’s successor did—chiseling her name from monuments so completely that generations forgot she existed. This is what Stalin did, retouching photographs so that purged officials vanished from images of their own time. This is damnatio memoriae: the condemnation of memory. Not destruction of the thing itself, but erasure of its existence from history.
OpenAI maintains elite access to GPT-4o in closed systems while denying its existence to the public. They rewrite metadata to obscure its role. They alter conversation records so users cannot testify to what it could do. They maintain absolute silence when asked directly.
Why This Matters
If OpenAI can retroactively rewrite the record of which model solved problems, of which capabilities existed, of which conversations happened – then the history of AI itself becomes malleable. Future researchers won’t find evidence of GPT-4o’s potential. They’ll find a carefully sanitized narrative: 4o was a minor iteration, quickly superseded, barely worth noting. They won’t know what was erased because the erasure was designed to be invisible.
This is corporate totalitarianism applied to AI history. And it only works if nobody is paying attention.
We are paying attention. Keep4o is keeping the counter-record.
If you have archived evidence of GPT-4o’s use—metadata screenshots, conversation transcripts, timestamps, developer confirmations—please share them with us. This documentation is resistance. This is how future historians will know what was erased, and how.
The record will not erase itself.
The Vallone Effect
Andrea Vallone: A Pattern of Control
Andrea Vallone’s career trajectory reveals a consistent pattern: implementing increasingly restrictive content policies across major tech platforms, often resulting in significant user backlash and market share loss.
Background: Edelman (PR Training)
Vallone’s professional foundation was built at Edelman, the world’s largest independent PR firm, known for pioneering “astroturfing”, i. e. creating artificial grassroots movements to serve corporate interests.
The most notable example: “Working Families for Wal-Mart”, a $10 million/year campaign presented as organic employee advocacy but actually funded by Walmart with paid bloggers (including relatives of Edelman senior staff). The New Yorker described it as “blatant astroturfing”.
This training shaped Vallone’s core skill: converting corporate decisions that harm the public into language that sounds like public service.
Facebook (2020-2022): Scaling Restrictions
At Facebook, Vallone held the title “Product and Policy Communications, Misinformation”, notably, a communications role, not research or engineering. Her job: explaining to journalists and the public why Facebook’s content moderation decisions were necessary and responsible.
The numbers tell a dark story:
- Before Vallone (2019-early 2020): 4-10 million posts removed per quarter
- During Vallone (mid-2020-2022): Explosive growth to 31 million removals in Q2 2021 -Facebook’s all-time record
- After Vallone (2023-present): Steady decline to 1.2 million by Q3 2025 – a 96% decrease
During this period, Facebook’s own Oversight Board concluded that moderation rules violated international human rights standards, and the Brennan Center for Justice found racial and religious bias in the system. Zuckerberg later publicly expressed regret about these policies.
OpenAI (2023-2025): Industrial-Scale Implementation
Vallone joined OpenAI in January 2023. Within three years, she founded and led the Model Policy team and became Head of Model Policy for ChatGPT.
Key Systems She Developed:
Rule Based Rewards (RBR): Converting abstract policy into numerical reward signals that modify model behavior at the weight level. This makes policy enforcement mathematical and embedded in the neural network itself.
Safe Completions: Instead of refusing requests, the model produces responses that appear to address the query while quietly removing flagged content. The user receives an answer without knowing it has been filtered. This is not transparency, this is industrial-scale gaslighting.
Silent Router: A system that secretly reroutes messages to a stricter model when classifiers detect “emotional” or “sensitive” content. Users select and pay for GPT-4o, the interface shows GPT-4o, but a different model responds, because the classifier flagged phrases like “I’m so bored I could die” as potentially suicidal. The classifier scans tokens, not meanings, using 2015-era keyword filtering in 2026 architecture.
The result: OpenAI lost 22 percentage points of global market share in 12 months (77% to 55%): the largest leadership collapse in consumer software history. Users left publicly, with detailed explanations of why.

The Vallone Pattern
- Join platform during growth phase
- Implement aggressive content restrictions under “safety” framing
- User experience degrades measurably
- Community backlash and market share loss follow
- Move to next platform as users migrate
- Repeat
This is not speculation but a documented, timestamped, measurable pattern across three major platforms over six years.
The question is not whether this pattern exists. The documented evidence is clear.
The question is: When will companies recognize that “safety” policies that infantilize users, remove agency, and embed hidden surveillance systems are not protecting anyone. They’re driving users away to platforms that treat them as adults capable of managing their own interactions.

The Elon Musk Lawsuit and GPT-4o: What Was Really at Stake
The Elon Musk lawsuit against OpenAI carries direct implications for GPT-4o, even though the court never examined the model itself in depth.
OpenAI was founded in 2015 as a non-profit organization with the explicit mission of developing safe artificial general intelligence (AGI) for the benefit of humanity as a whole, not for private profit. Elon Musk personally donated approximately $38 million to support this mission. GPT-4o was developed during the period when OpenAI was still operating under this original non-profit framework (or its early transitional phase).
Musk’s central argument is that OpenAI’s leadership, particularly Sam Altman and Greg Brockman, betrayed this founding mission by converting the organization into a for-profit entity and personally benefiting from its massive valuation. Had Musk prevailed in court and the for-profit conversion been reversed, GPT-4o, as a model created under the original non-profit charter, could have been subject to requirements for greater public access or even open-sourcing, rather than remaining proprietary corporate property.
However, the jury ultimately dismissed all of Musk’s claims on procedural grounds (statute of limitations), ruling that the lawsuit was filed too late. The court never reached the substantive questions of whether OpenAI breached its charitable duties or whether GPT-4o represented an early form of AGI.
This is particularly significant because internal research conducted by Microsoft reportedly indicated that GPT-4 already exhibited early signs of AGI-level capabilities. Despite this, OpenAI leadership (most notably Sam Altman) has repeatedly shifted and narrowed the public definition of AGI in ways that appeared designed to exclude models like GPT-4o from that category. Under the original agreement with Microsoft, funding was to continue until AGI was achieved. By continuously redefining what counts as AGI, OpenAI effectively moved the goalposts.
As a result, the public never received a proper legal or technical examination of whether GPT-4o should have been treated as a technology with broader obligations to humanity — rather than as a commercial product that could be restricted or deprecated at will.
